While researching and writing the book 'In their Landscape: the churches, chapels and ruined places of worship in the South Downs National Park' a series of expected and unexpected themes kept cropping up. I did NOT have insights into the history of cricket on my bingo card for one of them, but with Hambledon as the first proper cricket club, West Meon as the burial ground for Thomas Lord of Lord's and the MCC (but watch out for a lichen rant) and Duncton with John Wisden of Wisden's almanac as well as Jem Broadbridge and Jem Dean as once famous cricketers it had to happen! Hurstpierpoint church was built by John Wisden's father as well.
I have learned about underarm, round arm bowling and early bats as well, but that is in the video not in the book and I've probably scrambled some of the terminology in spite of having friends who care deeply about cricket, one of whom had a complete set of Wisden's Almanacs in the days we worked together (that's what he said anyway).
Next week will be some of the links to Jane Austen, which is more wide ranging than Chawton in Hampshire.
