‘Valzer No.11’ in A major was written by Italian guitarist, composer and educator Ferdinando Carulli at the beginning of the 19th century.
This Valse can be used as an exam piece when taking Grade 3 Classical Guitar Exam of examination boards such as ABRSM, RSL (Rockschool), Trinity College London, MTB (Music Teachers Board), LCME and others.
*Please note that in the RSL Classical Guitar book this piece is titled as
Waltz, Op. 241, No. 21 from Méthode complète pour guitare ou Lyre Op.241, but, in the first edition of the book this was titled as:
Valzer, No. 11 from Méthode complète pour guitare ou Lyre Op.27
As part of Opus 27, this waltz is one of Carulli’s most enduring pedagogical works. The "Complete Method" was so popular that it went through four editions during his lifetime and was later substantially revised as Op. 241, where many of these same waltzes appear with different numbering.
**Please note that in the original edition, the top two voices in bar 9 are G# and B and not B and D as shown in the RSL Book. In the video is played as written in the RSL Book.
For the exam, tempo indication is 60 bpm with a dotted quarter beat (3 eighths). You can set your metronome at 180 and play one eighth note on each beat.
Playing a bit slower or faster is generally acceptable and does not affect grading as long as it is played steadily and still capturing the piece's overall mood! Of course playing at tempo, as indicated, is always better!
