Описание: The Fashoda Incident in 1898 was a significant standoff between the British and French empires in the Sudanese town of Fashoda (now Kodok) on the Nile River. Both empires aimed to expand their African territories: the British sought a north-south axis from Cairo to Cape Town, while the French aimed for an east-west axis. A French expedition led by Major Marchand reached Fashoda in July, and a British force under Lord Kitchener arrived in September after defeating the Mahdists at Omdurman. The encounter led to a tense standoff but avoided armed conflict, escalating into a diplomatic crisis. The situation was resolved when the French government agreed to withdraw, formalized in the Anglo-French Agreement of 1899. This incident ended the French quest for an east-west African axis and reinforced British control in the Nile basin, leading to improved Anglo-French relations and the Entente Cordiale in 1904.
