The Houfeng Didong Yi, invented in China in 132 AD, was the world's first seismoscope, able to detect earthquakes and indicate their direction. In 132 AD, during China's Han Dynasty, the scholar and polymath Zhang Heng unveiled the Houfeng Didong Yi, the world's first known seismoscope. The name translates roughly to an 'instrument for measuring the seasonal winds and the movements of the Earth.'
The device was a large bronze vessel, approximately 2 meters in diameter. Around its top were eight dragon heads, each holding a bronze ball in its mouth. Directly beneath each dragon sat a bronze toad with its mouth agape. When a tremor occurred, an internal mechanism would cause one dragon to release its ball into the toad below. This not only created an audible alert but also showed the direction of the earthquake's origin.
The invention was reportedly sensitive enough to detect earthquakes hundreds of miles away. It was a revolutionary device that laid the groundwork for the modern science of seismology.
