STORYLINE
Mourners on Wednesday night gathered to pay their respects at the place where Lebanese Minister Pierre Gemayel was assassinated a day earlier.
Holding candles and photographs of Gemayel, mourners prayed and wept at the site in a suburb in Beirut, where the minister had been gunned down by unknown assassins on Tuesday.
"I am here because we have to defend the human right to live in peace. Actually I don't belong to any political association, but I am Lebanese, and we have to defend this crime,'' said a woman at the scene.
"They killed Pierre Gemayel and every time they kill one of us we grow stronger," another mourner said.
Gemayel, the minister of industry, was killed when two cars blocked his vehicle at an intersection in the suburbs of Beirut.
He was shot numerous times through a side window.
His killing immediately drew condemnation from all quarters.
There were calls for revenge among supporters, but Amin Gemayel, the father of the deceased, urged restraint, a plea echoed by the Maronite
Catholic Church.
