Hello, I'm Tom, the Product Manager at SciMed.
In the United Kingdom, our manufacturing prowess is something we take great pride in. When it comes to working with metals, most components undergo some form of coating. Whether it's to enhance physical properties like wear and corrosion resistance, improve conductivity, or simply achieve a more aesthetically pleasing finish, one common goal unites them all: ensuring the quality of the final product.
X-Ray Fluorescence, or XRF analysis, stands as one of the most reliable non-destructive techniques for achieving this goal.
Understanding XRF:
The underlying principle of XRF analysis is refreshingly straightforward. It involves exciting the atoms within a sample using a primary X-ray beam, which, in turn, generates secondary X-rays characteristic of each element present. These characteristic X-rays are then detected, and their individual signals are used to determine the composition of the sample.
Imagine our eyes as equally sophisticated detectors. Take this assortment of fruit as an example – our eyes can discern the varying energies and wavelengths of light, distinguishing different colours. In a metal coating, this might equate to identifying the proportion of zinc to nickel, for instance.
What's particularly advantageous is that the primary X-ray beam can penetrate a sample, distinguishing the characteristic X-rays of the elements in the base material from those in the coating. This not only provides compositional information but also offers precise measurements of plating thickness.
Simplicity and Modern XRF Systems:
In a bustling production environment, user-friendly tools are essential. Fortunately, modern XRF systems are both user-friendly and intuitive.
Let's visit the lab and take a closer look.
Introducing the BOWMAN P-Series, a compact benchtop XRF system designed for assessing plating thickness and composition. Its spacious chamber accommodates larger or irregularly shaped parts, and the slotted design allows for the insertion of larger sheets or printed circuit boards.
Conducting an analysis is straightforward. Here, I have a test sample – mild steel plated with a Zn-Ni coating. We expect the coating to meet a specification of 83% Zn to 17% Ni, with a coating thickness within the range of 2.5 to 5.0 microns.
The sample is positioned beneath the targeting laser, and the automated stage moves it into the measurement position. Within the software, a high-resolution camera ensures that the targeted sample area is in focus. Key details, such as part and batch numbers, can be input for traceability. A measurement can be completed in as little as 5 seconds.
Results are displayed on screen, indicating the percentages of zinc and nickel.
The BOWMAN XRF systems support a wide range of applications, from simple single-layer coatings to complex multi-layer specifications. XRF's versatility extends to elemental analysis of liquids, allowing you to monitor the condition of your plating bath solutions – all with a single system.
If you're eager to learn more, please don't hesitate to get in touch. My colleagues and I are always ready to offer guidance, and you may even want to experience the BOWMAN systems firsthand.
