I imagine that on the third night, Pav is still trying to become a martyr to stop the sulfur cultists and Kaiser.., despite being severely wounded. In the end, Pav's condition doesn't allow him to reach his goal, and he collapses in the middle of the road. Ultimately, due to his weakened physical and mental state, and prolonged exposure to the light of Rher, Pav mutates into a moonscorched.
As for the design, I see Pav like a dying vulture, waiting for the moment to feast on prey, driven by his hunger for revenge against the Kaiser. But it is this "hunger" that keeps him alive in suffering.
