Beverage on the Point, Otsuchi Point
February 16, 2026. I had planned on heading a few miles down the coast to a beach, but the moment I got in the car the rain came on hard. So I stayed close to home and wandered out to Otsuchi Point on the Fort Bragg Coastal Trail — a place that always seems to settle the mind, even on a storm day.
Otsuchi Point is named for Fort Bragg’s sister city, Otsuchi, Japan, a coastal town that shares our fishing heritage and our long relationship with the Pacific. The point sits just north of the Noyo Headlands, a stretch of land reclaimed from the old mill site and opened to the public only in the last decade. What used to be industrial ground is now open bluff, ocean air, and a trail that carries the stories of two Pacific communities tied together.
The rain drifted off not long after I arrived, leaving the point washed clean and quiet. Just me, the ocean working below, and a warm beverage in hand. Even on a day that starts with weather, this place has a way of reminding you to breathe, to watch, to let the moment be what it is. A little coastal Buddhism in practice — no hurry, no expectation, just the point, the sea, and the day unfolding.
