"It doesn't happen just in Italy that someone, these people, try to go into parliament. In Italy it happened with Cicciolina, and the specialists of electoral behaviour, sociologists that study this kind of phenomenon, talk about the 'ludic vote' - the 'voto ludico' in Italian. It means like something for playing for, an irreverent behaviour to demonstrate to the institution that we can say oh, get away, I will create some problems in your ordinary life, also it shows.... it is a way to refuse the ordinary politics."

STORYLINE:
Italy's first transgender parliamentary candidate is about to enter the political scene as the campaign season officially gets underway.
Elections to parliament are scheduled for early April and hopefuls from across the political spectrum are all trying to grab the limelight as they prepare for polling day.
The two frontrunners are Premier Silvio Berlusconi and Romano Prodi, a former premier and European commission president.
But also attracting attention is Vladimir Luxuria.
Born Vladimiro Guadagno, Luxuria is the first transgender candidate to run for the Italian parliament, and refers to herself as a 'she'.
She comes from the world of showbiz where she has performed in theatres, movies and clubs. But now she is involved in a different kind of performance - on the political stage.
Luxuria has been chosen by the Refounded Communist Party to top the polling list in one region - the choice more or less guarantees her entry into parliament.
A well-known figure in the gay community, Luxuria was prominent in the gay pride parade in 2003 and has a column in a leftist newspaper, and a radio talk show.
She says the rights of gay and unmarried couples are at the top of her agenda.
When questioned about her lifestyle she is quick to reply.
Born into a working class family in Southern Italy, Luxuria was one of five children of conservative parents.
She eventually moved to Rome and attended university, studying English literature.
