Climate & Health Seminar Series: "What are we doing? Advancing a discussion of how university instructors can address eco-anxiety among their students."
This seminar explores how university instructors can address eco-anxiety among students, featuring research by Dr. Simon Apolloni and Mallory Furlong.
The speakers defined eco-anxiety as a broad range of emotional responses to the climate crisis and shared data showing high levels of distress among Canadian youth, alongside personal experiences that illustrate its impact on students’ lives and choices.
Their research across Canadian universities found that while many instructors recognize eco-anxiety, only a minority make it a central focus of their teaching. In response, Dr. Simon and Mallory proposed “pedagogies of hope and resilience,” including dialectical teaching that balances harsh realities with possibility, creative and nature-based emotional processing, and community initiatives like the Climate Crisis Café. Ultimately, they argue that higher education must move beyond delivering information to fostering resilience and hope, so that students can face an uncertain future with agency and support.
