This is Nabegataki Falls — one of the few waterfalls in Japan where you can walk behind the water.
Formed by ancient volcanic activity around Mount Aso, the falls spill across a wide rock face instead of dropping into a single channel, creating a curtain of water you can experience from the inside.
I discovered this place while riding across Japan on a solo motorcycle journey through all 47 prefectures, following the roads that connect landscapes like this.
Some places are destinations. Others are simply worth the detour.
If you’d like to see how this stop fits into the larger ride across Japan, the full Kumamoto episode and Project 47 journey are below.

🇯🇵 Project 47:
Japan is made up of 47 prefectures, and my goal is to ride through every one of them by motorcycle — exploring the landscapes, roads, and places that make each region unique.
