It’s winter in the Cheviots as we fly along the Roman road (Dere Street) from High Rochester Fort to the Scottish Border at Blackhall Hill. On the way will pass, and circle, Chew Green with its amazing collection of forts and camps. Just quite why the Romans chose this route as it must have often been impassable in winter is a puzzle. Surviving a winter at Chew Green cannot of been easy.
How many temporary camps can you spot? There are several at High Rochester and Chew Green but also two large ones either side of Dere Street on the hill beyond Featherwood. The answer is certainly in double figures.
