CHINESE NEW YEAR Cake Tutorial: How to Make a Fondant Dragon, Gold Lanterns, Wafer Paper Fans, Lunar

I hand sculpted the dragon using fondant, which I had colored a light brown/gold color. This color helps to cut down on the amount of gold luster and highlighter dusts I'll need to use, as it already gets our minds thinking gold! I started by making a tapered snake shape, then added some curves and contours. I used a scale embosser/cutter tool from my shop HERE: https://www.custombakingbyerin.com/on... to give it some scaly texture! I should note that I wasn't able to fully capture this on my camera, but the dragon did have a little trouble staying in place with just buttercream due to the weight of the fondant, so I added a few toothpicks underneath him to support him.

Leaving a raw edge at the top of the cake rather than my usual leveling with a tapered offset spatula really changes the aesthetic of the cake! It's fun to paint it gold (after it has set in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or so).
