Brixham Harbour and Seafront – A Descriptive Walk
Brixham, located on the southern coast of Devon, England, is a charming fishing town with a rich maritime history. A walk along the harbour offers a picturesque view of colourful hillside houses, traditional fishing boats, and a vibrant working port.
The Harbour
Brixham Harbour is divided into an inner harbour and an outer harbour:
Inner Harbour: This is a more sheltered area, hosting around 50 berths for boats up to 35 feet.
Outer Harbour: This deep-water section accommodates around 250 larger vessels, including commercial fishing trawlers up to 70 feet long.
The harbour remains one of the busiest fishing ports in England, with a daily fish market and active trawler fleet. The sounds of seagulls, the scent of salt air, and the sight of nets and crates give it an authentic working feel.
Notable Features
Golden Hind Replica: A full-sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s historic ship is moored in the harbour and serves as a family-friendly museum.
Old Market House: A historic structure now used as a restaurant and café, it once served as a central part of the town’s fish trading.
Brixham Marina
Adjacent to the fishing harbour is Brixham Marina, managed by MDL Marinas. It offers over 500 fully protected berths suitable for leisure craft, available in all tidal conditions. The marina is modern, safe, and well-equipped for visitors, making it popular with sailors touring the English Riviera.
Scenic Walk and Sights
Walking along the quay, you’ll find:
Colourful terraced houses climbing up the hillside.
Views across Tor Bay, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
Local seafood stalls, cafés, and fish-and-chip shops.
The Statue of William of Orange, commemorating his landing in Brixham in 1688.
You can also enjoy the Breakwater, a long sea wall offering stunning views of the coastline and access to a small beach area.
Upcoming Improvements (2025)
The local council has announced a £750,000 regeneration plan that includes:
Solar-powered smart bins
LED safety lighting
New benches and plants
Better signage and access for paddleboarders and kayakers
These changes aim to enhance both the look and usability of the waterfront.
