What killed our baby geese?
I went on the chicken forums later that night and got a few replies to what killed our baby geese. There were two senarios to what could have happened.
1. The female geese started nest sharing halfway through the incubnation period. The second (adoptive) mumma would only sit part time, but what can happen when nest sharing starts is the chicks can get crushed/smothered/suffocated.
2. Male geese can also kill goslings. I highly doubt this is what happened. The daddy was super protective and would sit at the entrance to the coop and hiss at anyone that would walk by. He would then go sleep right in front of mumma to protect her from any 'bad guys' that may introude through the night.
The suggestion from a seasoned goose breeder was to seperate any cosharing of the nests by isolated the birds. Next time we will seprate the mummas and keep them with their partners for the duration of the incubation period.
