A violent assault on a busy Seattle street was captured on camera and quickly halted, thanks to the city's new crime-fighting technology.
A 19-year-old suspect is now in custody, and local business owners are hopeful this marks the beginning of safer streets.
The incident occurred near 3rd Avenue and Pine, where video footage from the Seattle Police Department's new security cameras showed a 19-year-old man attacking a 25-year-old victim without warning. The footage, which captured the suspect punching, kicking, and kneeing the victim, was instrumental in the suspect's apprehension.
Layla Farange, a business owner at Euro's Place, expressed her relief, saying, "Thank god the camera was there to identify him and he’s off the street now, I like these cameras."
When Seattle police received a call about the disturbance, officers requested analysts at the department’s Real Time Crime Center to review live video feeds. The cameras enabled police to catch the suspect in real time.
