On a trip to Northern California, Jane presents a mini-demo on watercolor brushes. From round to flat & others, she explains how to use them. At 6-7 minutes in, she shows her “sawed-off brush”, and explains the sawed-off brush owned by John Singer Sargent which is in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums.
She looks at a brush with a loose ferrule & observes that it's better to get a brush that performs as intended, rather than having to repair one. She also advises you to adapt your tools to suit your purposes. Brushes are tools, and as such, should work for you.
