NATIONAL MONUMENTS BY COUNTY - WICKLOW (video)
Continuing our nationwide tour of some of our state care national monuments…
In the heart of the Wicklow Mountains are the extensive remains of Glendalough monastery, founded by St Kevin in the 7th century. The round tower, churches and many other early medieval features form one of the most important early Christian landscapes anywhere in the world. Less well-known are the many monuments throughout the rest of the county, such as the Romanesque church at Aghowle, one of the most peaceful parts of the country. Staying with the Romanesque, the ruins of Baltinglass abbey, founded for the Cistercians monks by Diarmaid Mac Murchadha in 1148. Nearby, on the summit of Baltinglass Hill are the remains of a Neolithic passage tomb, excavated in the 1930s and now known to be one of the oldest megalithic tombs in the country. This part of Wicklow is rich in prehistoric monuments, such as the stone circles at Athgreany and Castleruddery, and the hillfort at Rathgall. Later medieval monuments can also be found, such as the castles at Kindlestown near Greystones and the aptly named Threecastles near Blessington. A monument of more recent vintage is the Dwyer-McAllister cottage in the Glen of Imail, where Michael Dwyer made one of his many escapes from British troops in the aftermath of the 1798 rebellion.
There are almost 1,000 monuments in State Care across the country, managed and cared for by the OPW - Office of Public Works. While access to these monuments is currently restricted, we remember that they have stood resilient for hundreds if not thousands of years and they will be there for you to visit once we are through this challenging time.
