The Five Hindrances – are mental obstacles that cloud the mind and obstruct concentration and wisdom.
1. Sensual Desire
This is craving and attachment to the five senses — sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.
When the mind is bound by desire, it cannot attain calmness or wisdom.
2. Ill Will
This is the mind of anger, resentment, or dissatisfaction when facing unpleasant things.
Desire and anger are like two great fires that burn the world, bringing suffering and misfortune to oneself and others.
3. Sloth and Torpor
These are states of laziness, dullness, and heaviness of the mind, which cloud awareness and drain energy.
4. Restlessness and Worry
This is the agitated, unstable mind — or the regret and anxiety over past actions.
When these states arise, the mind cannot stay calm or concentrate in meditation.
5. Doubt
This is uncertainty — not trusting the teachings, the path of practice, or oneself.
It is a state lacking the medicine for wisdom, causing hesitation and preventing insight from deepening.
➡ When a practitioner recognizes and overcomes these five hindrances, the mind becomes clear, stable, and radiant — opening the way to meditation and liberating wisdom.
