Established around 1855, the Indianapolis suburb of New Augusta sits on the Big Four Railroad, a rail line named after the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St Louis Railway which was headquartered in Downtown Indianapolis at the Chesapeake Building (now the Hampton Inn at Meridian & Maryland Streets). One of the last stops before reaching the Circle City from Chicago, the New Augusta community has retained its historic charm through deliberate preservation initiatives, including designation as an Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission locally protected district.
About the presenter:
New Augusta native Mark Patty leads us on a witty and insightful virtual tour of the historic architecture and preservation efforts of this hidden gem along Indy’s Northwest side. Mark has served as president of the New Augusta Village Association for the past 15 years.
This event is the 12th event in a new series presented by the Propylaeum focusing on different historic neighborhoods of Indianapolis. From Meridian Place, to Ransom Place, to Lockerbie, and more. Local experts and enthusiasts will discuss the history, architecture, and historical significance neighborhoods throughout Indianapolis and will share photos and stories from past and present.
