Vietnam Cobra Pilot Reacts to Audio of His Own SOG Mission - CW3 Joseph "Woody" Woodard

Proud to release this exceptionally unique podcast with the late, great Chief Woody Woodard, PANTHER 27: a Cobra pilot with the 361st AWC “Pink Panthers” who flew hundreds of missions in support of CCC during his 20-month tour in Vietnam.

In this episode, Woody and I listen together to rare combat audio from 29 January 1971, when two recon teams (RT Hawaii and RT Colorado) were both fighting for their lives in Laos. Woody's Cobra took hits as he and his 361st AWC fire team fought alongside the 57th AHC, Covey pilot Mike Cryer, Covey Rider John Plaster, USAF Spads, and others to save those teams. David “Lurch” Mixter was killed that day after shoving his teammate, Lyn St. Laurent, to the ground, saving his life.

This mission was captured on tape by the crew of 57th AHC slick White Lead. Our friend, CCS Huey Crew Chief Don Haase, and I spent 100+ hours decoding that chaotic audio and building a transcript, which Woody and I walked through together last year. His insight and commentary are incredible.

Woody was such a vibrant, down-to-earth guy, and I’m grateful we were able to share an early version of this with him before he passed away this May. This episode is released in his honor. Rest in Peace, Woody.
