Cleveland Clinic study shows ketamine infusions effective for chronic pain patients

Описание: A four-year Cleveland Clinic study has found that low-dose ketamine infusions can provide significant relief for patients suffering from chronic pain, offering new hope for those who have exhausted traditional treatment options.

The research, published in Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine, analyzed data from 1,034 patients and represents one of the largest real-world studies of its kind. According to Dr. Pavan Tankha, medical director of comprehensive pain recovery in Cleveland Clinic's Neurological Institute, the findings address critical gaps in pain management.

"We know millions of Americans are suffering from chronic pain, and this research shows a significant step forward in improving care for those patients who have otherwise exhausted all other treatment options," Tankha said.

The study examined patients who received a standardized five-day ketamine infusion protocol — 0.5 mg per kilogram of body weight administered over 40 minutes for five consecutive days. More than 90% of patients completed all five treatment days, demonstrating strong feasibility for outpatient administration.

Results showed that 20% to 46% of patients achieved meaningful improvements in daily functioning, sleep, and pain management. The effects lasted up to six months, with improvements noted in pain interference, depression, and physical function. Nearly half of patients experienced reduced pain-related anxiety, and 80% returned for repeat infusions.
