Disclaimer: Speakers of the Bhaderwahi, Sarazi & other native languages in the country have finally found their voice, i.e. Melodies. The #Melodies, a multimedia portal and promotion platform, has been providing songs in these endangered languages of the different regions since 2022. It posts music videos in these different languages.
The impetus for the initiative, the first of its kind, came after many people feared that the present generation is neglecting old traditions and culture and is focused on Western things only this would obscure other languages spoken in these region and lead to their decline. So, we started this initiative to preserve these languages because people have almost forgotten them.
Such different regions of the distinct regions of the country are rich in linguistic diversity.
These regions have several local languages linked to the Pahari culture, like #Pahari #Kashmiri, #Dogri, #Bhaderwahi, #Sarazi etc are the most widely spoken language here, but there are many other languages/dialects with a long history in these regions. Like #Padri is a Pahari dialect spoken in the #Paddar valley of Kishtwar district, which borders Pangi (#Himachal Pradesh), the Zanskar valley of #Ladakh, and the Marwah-Warwan valley on the south-eastern side.
Similarly, Bhaderwahi is spoken in the Bhaderwah sub-district and its peripheries in #Doda district. Other languages/dialects spoken in such areas are Kashmiri, #Ladakhi, Dogri, Himachali, Hindi, and Pahari languages such as Khashali, #Gojri, Meshabi, Paddari etc.
As far as Bhaderwahi is concerned, the 2011 Census put the number of people who spoke Bhaderwahi at 1,20,000, but various local surveys in recent times estimate the number of those who speak Bhaderwahi as their first language to be around 50,000.
We as a team understands that the process of writing songs etc in the local languages is “tough” but the people of these rural areas still loved to speak and hear the local languages.
In the beginning we too, found the task of creating content in these languages challenging and most people criticized us, but with the passage of time we improved ourselves & people now appreciate our initiative & efforts.
As far as #Sarazi is concerned it is one of the two main languages spoken in the #Chenab valley along with others. Sarazi is a local dialect and the vast majority of Hindus as well as others speak Sarazi. The 2011 Census says that Sarazi is spoken as a first language by more than 87,000 people.
The Melodies plans to include more languages in its project once it achieves financial stability. Our team does a tremendous job voluntarily.
