Presentation by Prof. David Pannell, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Western Australia, during a ZALF colloquium on 22nd June 2022
The research literature on farmers’ adoption of new agricultural practices is large, diverse and potentially confusing. Drawing the relevant lessons from this research is important for the design of effective agricultural policies, prioritisation of agricultural research, and conducting effective agricultural extension. In this presentation, David Pannell draws out the key lessons about the nature of the technology adoption process for farmers, what drives and inhibits their adoption decisions, and how quickly or slowly adoption occurs. He also demonstrates a new tool for predicting the speed and final level of adoption of a particular practice by particular farmers.
David Pannell is Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Western Australia; Co-Director, Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy; ZALF Fellow; ARC Federation Fellow (2007-2012); Distinguished Fellow and past president of the Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society; Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia; and a Director of consulting firm Natural Decisions. His research includes farmer adoption of conservation practices; economics of farming systems; the economics of land, water and nature conservation; and environmental policy.
