Thanks to our conference sponsors, ARM and HPE, and our hosting sponsor and BigBlueButton provider, Blindside Networks.
This presentation gives an overview of Tumbleweed's recent move to a fully DRM-based graphics stack and the removal of the fbdev drivers. This mainly concerns of how Linux picks up a framebuffer from the BIOS/UEFI, displays some nice graphics during boot and finally hands over the graphics card to the native driver.
Until recently, early-boot graphics before the device hand-over involved the kernel's fbdev subsystem. This created various problems throughout kernel and userspace. It also prevented us from providing a useful fall-back environment on systems w/o native graphics driver.
Finally, there will be an outlook to (possible) future developments of the Linux graphics stack and the ideas that are being discussed.
