Composed for Key Poulan, IVs senior recital at Fresno State University, “Cybertrombonic” (rhymes wth Sonic) is an exciting and innovative electronic music composition that showcases the expressive capabilities of the electronic trombone, accompanied by a synthetic soundscape.

The piece begins with a “connecting” introduction, featuring cybernetic sound effects, bringing the electronic trombone to life. The electronic trombone is achieved using various pedal effects (primarily the Cry Baby Wah-Wah) and enters with a simple, lyrical melody. The accompaniment is achieved with pulsing synthesized rhythm and by using synthetic and sampled trombones, cimbassos, and tubas.

The development of the work is processed and manipulated, creating a range of unique and otherworldly timbres. The synthetic accompaniment is constructed from a variety of electronic and digital sources, including synthesized samples, electronic percussion sounds, and granular textures. These elements are combined and manipulated to create a dynamic and ever-evolving soundscape that interacts with the trombone in exciting and unexpected ways. The work is intentionally set at tempi of 100 and 110 in order to explore a specific groove.

Throughout the composition, the electronic trombone takes on a range of roles, from leading melodic lines to textural sound effects. The performer is encouraged to experiment with extended techniques, such as growling, flutter-tonguing, scooping, and pitch bending, to create a wide range of expressive effects.

"Cybertrombonic" is a thrilling and dynamic composition that blends traditional acoustic performance with cutting-edge electronic processing and synthesis. It is a showcase for the expressive capabilities of the electronic trombone and a testament to the possibilities of modern electronic music.

An important fact regarding the work was Key Poulan, III’s fascination and use of A.I. (artificial intelligence) software to create the cover artwork and these program notes!

“Cybertrombonic” is available as a solo with synthetic accompaniment or as a solo with trombone and/or low brass ensemble with synthetic accompaniment.
