Описание: The British connection with Kuwait goes back to the 16th century. The Anglo-Kuwaiti agreement of 1899 formalised relations. In 1929, The Dicksons arrived in Kuwait. Soon, they became Kuwait's most famous expatriate couple and a symbol of Anglo-Arab friendship and understanding. Dame Violet Dickson, in particular, was a remarkable woman. She was variously referred to as Umm Saud or ‘Hajjiyah’, an unusual tribute for a Christian woman. Over the years, stories of The Dicksons have assumed almost legendary proportions in Kuwait. This is not surprising as both Dame Violet’s and her husband’s understanding of Arab culture went deeper than many well-known Arabists.Violet was strong, formidable and brisk, with the ability to embrace the unknown. She not only made friends among the Arab ladies of the town, but she and her husband had their own Bedouin tent and, in the spring, spent much of their time in the desert. Colonel Dickson and his wife observed and participated in the course of events that changed Kuwait’s history. In our special episode 'Celebrating 90 Years of British Women's Diplomacy in Kuwait, we pay tribute to her life and to the three extraordinary women Ambassador Belinda Lewis, the first British woman to serve as top diplomat in the Arabian Gulf, Sheikha Halah Al Sabah and Alison Shan Price, MBE who share with @Chaitali B Roy their reflections on Dame Violet and their thoughts on how the world has changed for women in 90 Years.
