Airbus is expanding the production of the H125 helicopter, a versatile aircraft known for its impressive capabilities. With a top speed of 160 knots and a range of approximately 360 nautical miles, the H125 is ideal for various operational needs. It has been widely adopted worldwide, with over 3,000 units in service across 50 countries.

India's aviation market is large and highly promising, with established players like Bell, Augusta Westland, and Airbus having a strong presence. However, none of these companies have set up manufacturing operations in India until now. Recognizing the opportunity, Airbus plans to establish a production facility in the country, which could not only boost business but also help reduce taxes, ultimately lowering the cost of the helicopter.

This move is a positive development for both India and Airbus, as it will create local employment opportunities and contribute to the economy. Airbus is currently scouting locations for its first final assembly line (FAL) for the H125, with four states in the running: Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. The company has chosen Andhra Pradesh as the site for its new manufacturing plant.

Among these, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh stand out as top contenders due to their well-established aerospace infrastructure, particularly in South India, which is rapidly becoming a hub for helicopter manufacturing and innovation.

Why South India is a Prime Location for Airbus Helicopters

South India, particularly Karnataka, is becoming a crucial player in the country’s aerospace industry. Karnataka’s aerospace hub in Tumkur, home to the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) helicopter plant, plays a significant role in the region’s aerospace development.

HAL’s 600-acre facility manufactures various helicopter models, including the KA-2026, a multi-role helicopter developed in collaboration with Russia and valued at $1 billion. This facility highlights the region’s immense potential as an aerospace manufacturing powerhouse.

The robust infrastructure in Tumkur provides an ideal foundation for helicopter production. The region also boasts a well-established supply chain network and cutting-edge research and development (R&D) capabilities. These factors make South India an appealing location for Airbus Helicopters as it seeks to set up its new H125 production line.
