Purple Heart is a hardy, low-maintenance plant known for its striking purple foliage and trailing growth.
To plant it:
1. Choose a spot – Select a location with partial sun to full sun. More sunlight brings out deeper purple colors.
2. Prepare the soil – Use well-draining soil. Purple Heart can tolerate poor soils but thrives in loose, fertile ground.
3. Plant cuttings or transplants – You can propagate easily by planting stem cuttings. Trim a healthy stem (4–6 inches), remove the lower leaves, and insert it into the soil.
4. Water gently – Water the plant lightly but consistently at first, until roots establish (about 1–2 weeks). After that, it’s drought-tolerant.
5. Space properly – Leave about 12–18 inches between plants to allow room for spreading.
6. Maintain – Prune regularly to encourage fuller growth and prevent legginess. You can pinch the tips to help the plant branch out.
