Lanzarote’s coastline hides a network of World War II bunkers and coastal defences, built during a war that never reached the island.
Although Spain remained officially neutral during WWII, the Canary Islands occupied a strategically sensitive position along Atlantic shipping routes. In response to uncertainty, and the possibility of invasion, observation bunkers, machine-gun positions, and artillery sites were constructed across Lanzarote to watch, delay, and deter.
This short film (Episode 1) explores several of those structures, including the bunker overlooking Famara beach and coastal positions elsewhere on the island. Built to blend into the volcanic landscape, many of these defences now sit quietly in plain sight, eroded by wind, salt, and time, and largely unnoticed by visitors.
Rather than focusing on military detail, this video reflects on landscape, anticipation, and absence: traces of conflict embedded in places where no battle was ever fought.
This visit follows on from my recent trip to the D-Day Museum and forms part of the Out and About playlist, exploring how history leaves marks far beyond the front line.
