Welcome to AS Chemistry Live Class 40! In this session, we continue Organic Chemistry (Part 16) with a detailed study of the Reactions of Alcohols, including the important qualitative test — the Iodoform Test, a frequently examined practical topic in AS Level Chemistry.
1️⃣ Oxidation of Alcohols –
Students revise how primary alcohols oxidise to form aldehydes and then carboxylic acids, while secondary alcohols form ketones. Tertiary alcohols resist oxidation under normal conditions. We discuss reagents like acidified potassium dichromate and expected colour changes.
2️⃣ Dehydration of Alcohols –
Learn how alcohols undergo elimination when heated with concentrated sulfuric acid to form alkenes. This connects alcohol chemistry to unsaturated hydrocarbons.
3️⃣ Substitution Reactions of Alcohols –
Alcohols react with hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr) to form halogenoalkanes. Reaction conditions and differences between primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols are explained clearly.
4️⃣ The Iodoform Test (CHI₃ Test) –
This is a test for compounds containing the –CH₃CO– group or alcohols with the –CH₃CH(OH)– structure. When warmed with iodine in alkaline solution, a yellow precipitate of iodoform (CHI₃) forms if the test is positive.
5️⃣ Identifying Ethanol Using Iodoform Test –
Students learn why ethanol gives a positive iodoform test due to its oxidation to ethanal under test conditions — a common exam explanation question.
6️⃣ Exam Practice & Common Mistakes –
We highlight errors such as misidentifying which alcohols give a positive test, forgetting reaction conditions, and confusing oxidation products.
