Описание: The Government has issued a formal apology to survivors of institutional abuse, with Taoiseach Micheál Martin telling Dáil Éireann that what they endured as children was “harrowing, heartbreaking and wrong”.

The apology follows a protest by four survivors of abuse in industrial and reformatory schools, which lasted more than 50 days outside Leinster House last year.

Survivors Maurice Patton O’Connell, Miriam Moriarty Owens, Mary Donovan and Mary Dunlevy Greene, along with their supporters, were present in the visitors’ gallery during the apology.

Speaking on behalf of the Government, the State and the citizens of Ireland, the Taoiseach expressed profound sorrow for the pain and abuse suffered by innocent children in State-linked institutions.
