Before we get to the meme we all see floating around social media, you know, the I fed my chickens yogurt and they went from laying 5 eggs a day to laying 16 eggs a day,

Let’s first talk about chickens, how the whole egg laying thing works, and feed.

Can you, should you, even feed yogurt to chickens? Here’s the deal, yogurt comes from milk and does contain lactose. Milk and its lactose are mammal food for babies. Chickens hatch from eggs and the mother does not nurse her babies. When baby chicks hide under their momma hen they are not nursing.

Because chickens are not mammals they do not have the necessary genetics, the required enzymes to digest lactose. We can say chickens are lactose intolerant. Chickens are not equipped with the enzymes necessary to digest the sugars in milk.

So, can you, should you feed chickens yogurt. A little yogurt is fine. Chickens can tolerate a small amount. Even though there is no reason, no benefit of eating yogurt itself, chickens do benefit from the probiotics in the yogurt. So it’s a feed a little yogurt to chickens knowing it might irritate their digestive track, because the probiotics are good for them. I would argue, if you are interested in feeding probiotics there are other better ways to do it.

Now, the original question, the increasing egg laying statement. Will old yogurt increase egg laying in chickens? How many eggs a chicken lays is determined by genetics. It takes about 26 hours for a chicken to make an egg. Period. You cannot speed up this process.

In a year, a designer hybrid chickens can lay a lot of eggs and heritage old fashioned breeds lay less eggs. But what they lay is what they lay. What influences egg production is proper nutrition, a good source of feed, and clean water. And reducing stress.

So the answer to the, is it fact or fiction, is it truth or myth question about feeding yogurt to chickens is a definite no. Feeding yogurt to chickens will not increase egg production. There are no shortcuts to getting chickens to lay more eggs. A little yogurt won’t hurt your chickens but a better approach would be to feed them a high quality feed and good clean water. And give them a happy stress free home to live in.
