"Web Summit as a conference really forms a niche, building bridges between startups and companies who are looking to recruit fresh new talent. They've differentiated themselves from other conferences in the market because they just have a real stellar lineup of speakers to go along with that."

"I don't think that Web Summit as a brand overall is going to be detrimentally damaged by what happened here. There is Web Summit in Rio, and I went personally, and I was shocked about just how amazing the startups were in Brazil. So, bringing this international community into Brazil, I think, was something that was very much needed, and I think that will carry on. There's also going to be the Web Summit in Qatar for the first time in 2024. So, I think that will also carry on as well."

LEADIN:
Paddy Cosgrave, the CEO of prominent European tech conference Web Summit, resigned from his role on Saturday (October 21) amid backlash for his public statements that suggested Israel was committing war crimes.
A spokesperson for Web Summit, which organises one of the world's largest tech conferences every year, said in a statement that it will appoint a new CEO, and the conference will go ahead next month in Lisbon as planned.
STORYLINE:
The 2023 edition of tech conference Web Summit is fast approaching.
But it's already been rocked before the doors have even opened, after its CEO had to resign over comments he made about the Israel-Hamas war.
Paddy Cosgrave, the Irish entrepreneur who is also founder of Web Summit, said in a statement on Saturday that his personal comments “have become a distraction from the event, and our team, our sponsors, our startups and the people who attend.”
“I sincerely apologise again for any hurt I have caused,” he said.
Cosgrave’s resignation is a prominent example of the fallout from the Israel-Hamas war that has spilled into workplaces everywhere, as top leaders of prominent companies weigh in with their views while workers complain their voices are not being heard.
Islamic rights advocates say much of the corporate response has minimized the suffering in Gaza, where thousands have died in Israeli airstrikes, and created an atmosphere of fear for workers who want to express support for Palestinians.
“War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are,” he added.
