Enviro Close-Up #704 Dr. Alexey Yablokov, Grandfather of Russian Environmentalism
Dr. Yablokov was a renowned scientist in the Soviet Union and then Russia—environmental advisor to Presidents Gorbachev and Yeltsin, the author of 20 books, 500 scientific papers and he was an activist, too. He was president of the Center for Russian Environmental Policy and, globally, vice president of the World Conservation Union. Karl Grossman got to know Dr. Yablokov well. Dr. Yablokov invited Grossman to Russia to speak multiple times on environmental issues. Grossman stayed with him in Russia. In the United States, Dr. Yablokov stayed at Grossman’s home. Dr. Yablokov passed away in 2017 but before he died, in 2013 Grossman interviewed Dr. Yablokov at a Health of the Environment Conference in Florida. Dr. Yablokov was a main figure in seeking to establish “the health of the environment” as a key element in environmental understanding and policy. As he explains in this Enviro Close-Up, “without environmental health” it is “impossible to have public health”—it is “impossible for people to be healthy without a healthy environment.” He describes “environmental health” as “simple and complicated.” He discusses research—notably that of his Center for Russian Environmental Policy—that links the health of all species with the health of human beings, how a polluted environment connects to cancer and other diseases in people. A polluted environment, says Dr. Yablokov, is a “bell of warning” in regard to the lives of people. He specifies environmental threats and says the “worst” is “radioactive pollution.” And he details what people can do for “the health of the environment.” Please support our work.
