As a vegan and plant-based Dietitian, I often get asked about which supplements we need to be taking on a vegan diet, and vitamin B12 is a non-negotiable! Vitamin B12 is important for maintaining brain health, eye health and heart health. It also helps to make sure that we're nice and energized throughout the day, can maintain iron stores, etc.!
We used to be able to get vitamin B12 from the soil, and vegetables that we eat from the soil, but because our soil is so depleted of nutrients, that's not a reliable source anymore. Instead, I recommend taking a vitamin B12 supplement regularly to make sure you're getting enough.
