Our process for setting up this amp
consists of just two steps:
The first is to start with a bass tone that
matches the key and rhythm of the song
(tone and balance controls of the pickups, video soon)
Next, but not least
is adjusting the
input gain.
Our goal here is to
push the signal to
make each note more
stable (tone benefits from
this too). You will notice
that too much input
destroys dynamics
and boosts unwanted
frequencies like subs.
So the easiest thing
is to imagine that we
are using an LA2A ...
In the rare case that this was not enough,
our next step is to compare the 4 inputs.
Here we only have to match the volume of the channel
on the right with the one on theleft, then we copy the
preset to a new box and do the same with the two
remaining channels.
This way we can easily listen to the
differences between the 4 channels.
For us this is more than enough to get a good
recording tone. The following steps that we will
describe are usually done after the singer.
For example, treble can give you beautiful
definition but the interest is that the notes are
understood, not that they can be "read" which
would create a problem to understand what the singer is saying.
Notice how even if we cut the treble
the bass is still there.
Something similar to what happens with
excessive input can happen with bass.
Often times less bass is the key to getting powerful and punchy bass.
