Van Life Tips and Tricks: How to Stay Warm in a Camper Van During Winter | Winter Van Life Tips
Vanlife is very different from camping. Winter survival outdoors is quite different than van life or living in a van with access to warm places, a gym, groceries, and a heating element, and you are NOT carrying all of your essentials on your back.
I am living my life and I have food, water, shelter, climate control, a bed, kitchen and cooking elements, modern refrigeration, a garage, and transportation. Should I keep going? Does this still sound like camping or a survival scenario?
Okay, Good. Glad we cleared that up.
There are so many ways to keep comfortably warm in the winters when living in a van. Let's gloss over the basics.
1. Drive to the desert, lower elevations, or where you know it is warm. YOU LIVE IN A VEHICLE. Turn the keys and drive in the direction of better weather and temperatures.
2. Keep the doors shut, insulated window covers on, and hunker down. Don't spill all of your warm air.
3. Behave like it is a survival situation and it stays warmer. Under warm bedding. Wear expedition weight base layers. I have Patagonia Cap3s and R1 layers. Typically use them for active outdoor pursuits, but they'd serve me well if "Surviving". I have a variety of warm jackets as well that layer well if needed.
4. If you have a heater and the house batteries of the Van can handle it, by all means, run it!
*if you are-be wary of exhaust and keep it clear so you DO NOT breathe in the fumes from running a diesel or combustion style heater.
5. Boil water, pour it into a battle, and put that bottle somewhere in your bedding or sleeping bag. That is an old backpacking hack I used when doing winter trips and temperatures were dropping below zero.
6. Park the vehicle where you are not exposed to the elements. If you can find covered parking, something to break the wind and reduce the amount of warmth being pulled off the vehicle it is helpful. Anything along this line of thinking can likely help you maintain the heat you are creating.
7. Spend more time at your 24/7 gym, cafes, bookstores, or places that are open with hours that suit your schedule. Similar to how I keep my golden retriever exercised in damp or seriously cold conditions, I go to hardware stores like Lowes, Home Depot, or Ace. They are dry, typically warm, and quite welcoming to dogs.
All of these are basic options for those of us dwelling in vehicles. I come from a background of outdoors, specifically long-distance backpacking, and find that these come naturally to me, but as I have parked around others and spent time with people, these things are apparent for all the newcomers that have taken to this lifestyle.
A unique point to recall that can put you into the perspective of a transient lifestyle or what homeless people do face is the simple view of survival. What gets me through to the next meal, a bit of warmth, safely transported to the desired destination, etc. If this mentality is adopted with more embrace and lot of lifestyles can be combatted with more preparedness, which is what I see as the biggest case in new van lifers. The questions these folks have in forums about how to do WHAT and WHY are addressed with little thought and can be figured out with a bit of curiosity, brainstorming, and craftiness. Or low fear of failure and learning from mistakes.
All these extra thoughts to say, best of luck as Spring is slowly greeting us finally:).
Wishing you a comfortable thawing out and drying out from a long cold winter season.
