Maserati's Certificates of Origin and Authenticity explained

We begin with the Certificate of Origin. When you see a classic Maserati, and it is mentioned "Certified by Maserati" or "with the Maserati certification" in 99.9 per cent of the time, what is meant is the so-called "Certificate of Origin". This is a service provided by Maserati, but more specifically by the Maserati Archive, and it consists of a set of documents.

In order to get the Certification actually, the only thing you have to do is send some pictures of your car and, very important, some pictures of the numbers: the chassis number and the internal engine number, and send them to Mr. Fabio Collina, who's in charge of the archive at Maserati. He will then, if the numbers check out, check in the Archives if he can find documents on your car. And the documents, in a way, they are like the birth certificate of your car. They will tell you a lot about how your car left the factory all those years ago in Modena. For example, for this Maserati Ghibli, we learn that the car was sold directly to a customer in Modena. So, there was no dealer involved. It tells you the original color of the car, "Blue Medio". And it even tells you if there were special options that are ordered by the client. For example, this specific car has a Blaupunkt radio, headrests, and has a special leather steering wheel with a specific diameter and assisted steering.

This service has been around for quite some time, and as I mentioned, it tells you a lot about how the car left the factory. But in a way, it doesn't really tell you anything about the car today.

Now, let's move on to the Certificate of Authenticity. This is the elaborate inspection of your classic Maserati. Maserati launched, together with the launch of the MC20, a completely new certification program from the classic department, which is called the "Certificate of Authenticity", and this is a whole different ball game.

When we saw that for the "Certificate of Origin" you just had to send some pictures to Italy to obtain the documents, here you actually have to send the car to Viale Ciro Menotti in Modena to the Classiche department where they will check and test the car on over 300 different points with the main goal of checking the authenticity of your car. The originality is what they are certifying. The whole process takes up 4 to 5 days, so it's really a thorough investigation, and if your car scores more than 75 points on a total score of 100, you are awarded the "Certificate of Authenticity".

This is where the video turns into a sort of unboxing video because this is what you'll receive from Maserati if your car gets awarded the Certification, this beautiful box with the metal inlay featured on the cylinder head headcovers, 1914, the year of the birth of the company and the history of all the Maserati logos over the past 100, almost 110 years. It is a truly beautiful box. Inside, you will find this enamel plate with the chassis number of your car.

Then, this diploma, which is proof of certification and authenticity of all technical and aesthetic characteristics of the car. There's an envelope with a summary of all the findings during the certification process. They check the engine, they check the compression, they check the oil, all the oils and liquids. All their findings are in their report, and you also get a sort of a photo documentary of the certification process. These are pictures taken in the buildings of the Maserati Classiche department. And they do a photoshoot of your car in front of the Maserati showroom in Modena.

All this is included in the certification box. Then there are also two pieces of artwork. One with drawings of the specific model and one with a drawing of the original Trident logo, designed by one of the Maserati brothers many years ago. There's also a small metal plate. That's put on the car. It's on the inside of the door. It is glued on there. They don't really rivet it on the car. It's glued, but this is the sign, this is the proof that your car received the brand new Certificate of Authenticity by Maserati Classiche.
