Kusatsu Onsen rests high in the mountains at around 1,200 meters. Traveling there from Nagano means weaving through mountain roads, where quiet farming fields open up between the slopes. The journey itself feels like a gentle transition into another world.
The Fudō myōō statue at Kusatsu Onsen's Sainokawara exists because the area's rocky, steaming landscape resembled the legendary Buddhist "Riverbed of the Dead" (Sainokawara). In this legend, Fudō Myōō acts as a powerful protector, enshrined there to ward off evil from the powerful volcanic landscape.
