Alexander the Great (356–323 BC) was the king of Macedon and one of history’s greatest military commanders. Trained by the philosopher Aristotle, he combined intellectual curiosity with extraordinary ambition and leadership from a young age.

After becoming king in 336 BC, Alexander quickly consolidated power in Greece before launching a massive campaign against the Persian Empire. Through a series of decisive victories, including the battles of Issus and Gaugamela, he defeated the Persian king Darius III and took control of one of the largest empires in the ancient world.

Alexander continued his conquests across Egypt, where he was declared a pharaoh, and into Asia, reaching as far as India. His empire stretched from Greece to the Indus River, creating a vast network of cultural exchange known as the Hellenistic world, blending Greek, Egyptian, and Persian influences.

Despite his success, Alexander’s relentless ambition and long campaigns exhausted his army. He died in 323 BC at the age of 32, leaving no clear successor. His empire soon fragmented into competing kingdoms.
