Vivid Sydney, now in its 10th year, is the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. Vivid dates 2018 May 25 to June 16.

It features the spectacular and popular outdoor lighting and projection displays on Sydney landmarks and at popular locations, plus a rich program of music and ideas events.

Vivid Sydney 2018 runs for 23 nights from Friday May 25 to Saturday June 16 2018 between 6pm and 11pm.

Vivid 2018 is happening in the CBD, Barangaroo, Chatswood, Circular Quay (Opera House, Customs House and surroundings), Darling Harbour, Kings Cross, Luna Park, Taronga Zoo, The Rocks and The Royal Botanic Garden.

Customs House is built on the land of the traditional Indigenous owners, the Eora people, and is the site of the First Fleet landing. It is one of the most significant buildings in the history of European settlement in Australia.

In celebration of their 100 year anniversary, May Gibbs’ iconic and immortal characters, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and their stalwart companions come to life during Vivid Sydney 2018 on the façade of Customs House and encounter the weird, the wonderful, and things quite unknown altogether. This whimsical piece will be narrated by renowned Australian film and television actress Noni Hazlehurst AM, Patron of the Australian Children’s Laureate, and beloved by Play School devotees far and wide.
The Snugglepot and Cuddlepie light installation are projected onto the beautiful sandstone exterior of Customs House during Vivid Sydney which runs from Friday 25 May to Saturday 16 June 2018.

Exactly 100 years ago, Author May Gibbs gave Australia two characters who dropped out of a gumtree and became instant superstars. Since then, pretty well every Australian child has grown up steeped in the adventures of the intrepid Gumnut Babies, the audacious Snugglepot and the demure Cuddlepie.
Generations of Australian children have barracked for their gumnut heroes as they battled the evil Banksia men and their wicked henchmen, the vicious Mrs Snake and the voracious monster Octopus. Renowned art and animation collective Ample Projects brings May Gibbs’ immortal characters to life on the façade of Sydney’s 1845 Customs House.

Join Snugglepot and Cuddlepie and their stalwart companions on their journey through the Australian Bush as they encounter the weird, the wonderful — and things quite unknown altogether.

May Gibbs is one of Australia’s best loved classic childrens’ book illustrators and authors. May’s deep love and understanding of the Australian bush was portrayed in her work, engendering in children her own love of nature. She based her characters and scenery on the plants found in the Australian bush during time spent as a child in Western Australia and on visits to the Blue Mountains in her adult years.

The Gumnut Babies, May’s classic book about Australian bush fairies was first published in 1916 and became an instant success. This was followed by further stories including her most famous creations of all, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie in 1918.

When she died in 1969, May Gibbs kindly bequeathed the copyright from her designs to The Northcott Society and Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Through her foresight, proceeds from the sale of May Gibbs products have supported thousands of Australian children with disabilities and their families.
