So how do you change ATF fluid? Generally, the transmission fluid pan has a drain plug, on the side, which takes a 3/8 drive socket wrench with no socket on the end. Stick the 3/8 drive directly into the plug & loosen the plug in a usual manner. Obviously you either need to jack the car up, at least the front driver side, or drive the car onto a ramp.
How often should you change and replace the ATF fluid? The fluid should be changed every 60k miles. Always use Honda ATF-Z1 or DW-1. If it's not available, you may use a DEXRON III as a temporary replacement. Now they have the Honda CVT fluid is the better choice.
How much ATF fluid do I need? The manual says it will need 3 quarts for a drain/refill but our research indicates 3.4 quarts (with filter). Torque: 29 ft/lbs (Drain Plug) & install a new crush washer on the drain bolt. Start the engine and let it run for about five minutes then recheck the level.
Aiman's dad was working on his brother Asfa's Insight - diagnosing the pinging, ringing noise from the engine with suspects including idler pully and AC compressor - when he noticed the ATF fluid splattered all over the splash rubber shield and on the underside of the car underneath the drive shaft and transmission bay indicating an ATF leak.
A transmission leak is a big deal & spells serious trouble for your car, truck, or SUV. If you let too much transmission fluid leak, the transmission will begin to slip, which can quickly cause long term damage. Unlike oil, transmission fluid is flammable, and will flash if it hits the exhaust manifold. Transmission fluid is usually red to dark red; it’s pink if there’s a real problem.
Seals
Seals are made from either rubber or metal. Things get pretty hot underneath your automobile’s hood and the seals are affected by this heat. The wear and tear can eventually crack the seals, especially the pan gasket.
Lines
Transmission fluid travels through transmission lines to various areas in your transmission. These lines are made from aluminum or steel, but heat and age can cause them to crack.
Pump
Transmission fluid is pushed through the lines by the transmission pump. Usually, the body of the pump cracks somewhere and fluid leaks out of it or is pushed out when the pump propels the transmission fluid throughout the system.
Installation
The most common source of a transmission leak due to faulty installation is from the transmission pan. The pan is not mounted correctly or incorrect bolts are used to secure it. Something as simple as these bolts will make transmission fluid leak from the pan. Hopefully, the bolts just need to be tightened.
Obviously, Aiman's auto repair videos are mostly designed for entertainment purposes. Aiman is not a professional and not a certified ASE mechanic. If you're looking for instructions or steps on how to fix or diagnose problems with your car, SUV, minivan or vehicle repair, how to remove, replace or install parts, you should always watch more than just one videos. The videos should always be used only as a guide. Manufacturers always recommend using genuine OEM parts but sometimes cheaper aftermarket can be as good as the originals.
