Day five of my journey along Poland’s Eagles’ Nest Trail begins with the best breakfast of the entire hike and the first properly warm weather of the trip.
From Klucze, a town shaped by centuries of mining and industry, I climb to the viewpoint at Czubatka before descending through the forest past the Red and Green Ponds.
Beyond the trees lies one of Poland’s strangest landscapes: the Błędów Desert.
I explore its sandy paths, learn how mining and deforestation helped create the so-called “Polish Sahara,” attempt to reach its northern section, and cross the open landscape towards Róża Wiatrów.
After climbing back to Czubatka for a much-needed frozen drink, I return through Klucze, stock up at Żabka and rejoin the red trail near Jaroszowiec.
Another ten kilometres of forests and open fields eventually bring me to Rabsztyn Castle—just slightly too late to get inside. Naturally.
But according to legend, the ruins above conceal an enchanted underground palace filled with sleeping knights and children turned to stone…
The journey continues in Episode 6.
