Economist Saul Eslake believes altering the WA GST deal was an easy way for the federal government to save money ahead of a state budget where Treasurer Jim Chalmers has vowed economic restraint.
“The [federal] government … will be giving $7 billion from the budget to the richest state in Australia, Western Australia, so that it can mean budget surpluses while every other government in the country, including the federal government, is running budget deficits,” Mr Eslake told Sky News Australia.
“So that ultimately Western Australians will have better public services whilst paying lower state taxes than other Australians.”
