lead in: renewed political violence in argentina and signs of rebellion by workers against a wage and price freeze plan on friday (march 12th) troubled president isabel peron's government. the bloodstained shoes of miguel ragone, a left- wing peronist and former governor of salta province, one thousand miles (1,600 kilometres) northwest of buenos aires, were found after he was kidnapped on thursday (march 11th). a right-wing group announced he had been executed, but his body had still not been found by friday (march 12th). in buenos aires province, left-wing montoneros peronist guerrillas shot and killed a policeman. two other policemen were killed when they opened the door of a bomb-rigged car. mrs peron spoke at a general workers'
commentary: mrs peron received an ecstatic welcome when she arrived at the rally. her government has faced an inflation rate of four hundred and twenty three per cent over the past twelve months. earlier in the week it launched an austerity programme which included a small wage increase and a series of major price rises before freezing both wages and prices. widespread labour unrest, marked by wildcat strikes followed the announcement and earlier on wednesday, mrs peron announced a twenty per cent pay rise for workers and other modifications to the austerity programme. at the rally, she called on argentinians to work together to help solve the country's economic problems. after her prepared speech, mrs peron made several impromptu remarks, including a veiled allusion to reports of a threatened military takeover. she said there was a danger of the devil waking up and added that the government's plan could be upset by an earthquake. (natsof)
but labour unrest sparked by the economic measures continued. sitdown strikes, slowdowns and walkouts in protest took place in the industrial belt around buenoa aires and in cordoba, four hundred and forty miles (710 kilometres northwest of the capital.
