STORYLINE

Four car bombs, including at least two suicide bombings, struck Iraq on Thursday as insurgents unleashed another day of bloody attacks.

In the worst attack, an explosives-rigged car detonated near a market and cinema in the eastern New Baghdad neighbourhood of the capital, killing 17 Iraqis and wounding 65, police said.

A crowd at the scene of the blast turned its anger on police and journalists, beating at least two Iraqi photographers.

Police and US troops fired in the air to disperse the crowd, according to an Associated Press photographer at the scene.

Another suicide car bomber targeted an American convoy on a highway in western Baghdad, injuring two civilians, police said.

Iraqi police said the attack in the Khadra neighbourhood injured three Iraqis, who were taken to the al-Yarmouk hospital for treatment.

There was no immediate comment by US military on the incident.

Two more car bombs exploded in the northern city of Kirkuk, about 290 kilometres (180 miles) north of Baghdad.

One blast happened near a police station in a central residential area, killing two people and wounding two.

Police first thought the car bomb was targeting a nearby Shiite mosque, but later concluded that it was aimed at an even closer police station, he said.

Neither building was damaged, but some homes and apartments in the area were, as well as three parked cars, the police said.

The other car bomb detonated at the northeastern entrance to Kirkuk as experts were dismantling an improvised explosive devise found by residents in the street, police said.

Two of the explosives experts were wounded in the blast, which also destroyed nearby vehicles.
