1. Prepare the Bed
Clear the bed and remove the mulch.
Set the mulch aside — it can be reused later once the beans are established and the cover crop has been killed by frost.
This bed was last year’s hügelkultur bed, so no extra fertiliser is needed — the decomposing organic matter below will provide plenty of nutrients.

2. Make Trenches for Sowing
Create shallow trenches along the bed — these will help with drainage during the wet winter months.
Place broad bean seeds on top of the trench ridges, spacing them roughly 20–25 cm apart in the row and 30–40 cm between rows.

3. Sow the Cover Crop
Between and within the bean rows, sow mustard and fenugreek as a temporary cover crop.
The cover crop will protect the soil over early winter and will die back naturally after hard frost, enriching the soil as it decomposes.

4. Cover and Protect
Lightly cover the beans and cover crop with soil and firm down gently.
Place netting or mesh over the bed to protect the seeds from birds and other animals.

5. Aftercare

Once the mustard and fenugreek die back in midwinter, replace the mulch around the young bean plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Beans should overwinter and start vigorous growth in early spring.
