Greek Okra with Erofili Sauce Recipe | KALI OREXI

In June 2018, I was lucky enough to travel to Crete with my family. After an adventurous morning down a rocky road and steep descent to Balos Beach, we were absolutely starving!

I called the concierge at the hotel, Jimmy (a Greek Australian in fact), and asked him for a lunch recommendation for the best traditional Cretan food in the area. He recommended "Erofili", a family-run restaurant in Neo Chorio, Chania and we were so glad that he did!

When I posted the dish to my social media, there were requests for the recipe. So I asked Jimmy to call Erofili, on our behalf, and ask if the owners would be interested in offering us an “Okra in Tomato Sauce” cooking lesson, and in the true Greek fashion, they said, “YES!”

The sauce was made with purple onions, fresh ripe tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, white wine, fresh parsley, fresh mint, dried sage, oregano and thyme and a lesser known herb called 'summer savory' (θρούμπι) - a herb the restaurant owners collect in the wild - that gave the dish an incredible sweetness! The okra was sautéed briefly until all their sticky-sliminess cooked off and they browned a little, before the sauce was added and they were braised until cooked through.

The whole experience is what made this dish truly something special. A massive thank you to Manoli from Erofili Traditional Restaurant for sharing this incredible recipe with us and opening up his kitchen to the world!
