The outer edge of each disk is lined with ridges about 1/8" apart. The player holds plectra against the ridges as they rotate past, and the pitch one hears corresponds to the number of ridges scraping by per second. The plectra are attached to styrofoam cups which provide more surface area for sound radiation. Savart's Wheel is named for Felix Savart, a 19th century French physicist who explored the idea of cogged wheels for demonstrating the relationship between frequency and pitch.
